Raptors over the Grasslands: Spring birding on the Rocky Mountain
Front
The Rockies in springtime features one of the world's greatest raptor
migration and it's all overhead at the Anchor B Ranch. Thousands of Golden
Eagles ride the thermals of the Rockies to their spring breeding grounds.
If you like Golden Eagles this is the place and the time to be here.
Join us during the spring migration in the centre of Canada's finest,
most scenic ranch country. Here the Rockies meet the foothills and the
prairies providing edge habitats that draw an abundance of birds every
spring. You'll keep busy watching for some of the 150 species (and counting)
found in this incredibly diverse eco-system.
Watch from the highpoints on the Anchor B Ranch and come eye to eye
with threatened species like the Ferruginous hawks or lay back all afternoon
on the saloon deck and watch a pair as they nest. Look carefully and
you may see the Perigrine Falcon, the fastest bird in the world. On the
ground and fence posts of the ranch you'll find the Western Meadowlark,
whose trademark song is the voice of the prairies. At night in the peaceful
quiet of ranch country, broken only by the sound of crickets, listen
carefully and you might hear an owl hooting down by the Oldman River.
Your guide, nature photographer Steve Short has been an avid birdwatcher
since the age of twelve. He has travelled all over North America, to
Africa and Peru to watch birds. With over 1200 birds on his life list
he gets just as much joy from watching ordinary species as rare ones.
Combine birdwatching and photography as we explore the rich biodiversity
of the Anchor B ranch lands and surrounding landscapes.
